Sitio de Calahonda
Sitio de Calahonda

Sitio de Calahonda is the largest property development you will find between Marbella and Fuengirola, in the Malaga region of the Costa del Sol. Even though Calahonda is technically categorized as an urbanization, it could easily qualify as a small town.

Born in the 1960’s, the development of Sitio De Calahonda reached its peak in 2002 which saw the completion of sales of all available plots. The 600,000 square meters of Sitio de Calahonda consists of private villas, townhouses and apartments spreading form the beach to the upper slopes of the hills.  Most properties on the upper slopes will have stunning panoramic sea views and it is often easy to see Africa and Gibraltar. The beach side urbanizations of Calahonda have private access to the beach and fantastic views.

Calahonda has been well planned out in terms of providing amenities to its residents and has ample recreational space. There are open park areas throughout Calahonda with beautiful pine trees and some with children’s play areas.  There are three commercial centers which house most of the development’s 45 restaurants, cafeterias and bars. There are several banks, supermarkets, health centers and shops throughout Calahonda with the addition of other businesses such as a garden centre, a post office, hardware stores, furniture shops, travel agencies, car hire services, mechanics, property management specialists, estate agents, gyms, a dance studio, pharmacists, a school, nurseries, hairdressers, beauty salons and much more. Every amenity you could need is here.

A “tourist train” runs from the bottom of Calahonda to the top of the urbanisation throughout most of the year. It is a slow moving “train” of about four carriages pulled by a road vehicle designed to resemble a steam train. It circulates from El Zoco shopping centre through the main streets of Calahonda on a half-hourly basis. The whole route takes around 45 minutes. The driver will stop along the route when people need to disembark. Tickets are between 2 and 4 euros depended on distance travelled. The train is very popular in the summer months with tourists.

Calahonda has two public taxi ranks, one located at El Zoco shopping area and the other is at Los Cipresses. Taxis will also pick up from your home if requested by telephone. The taxi service is mijas is centralised by one company, ensuring a safer service. You cannot ‘hail’ as taxi in the street as you can do in European cites. You must either call them to collect you from a property or place or go to a taxi rank.

There is a modern, efficient underground railway line running from Malaga city centre, through the Airport, along the coast, through Torremolinos, Benalmadena and ending in Fuengirola. From here you can pick up the regular bus service, again traveling along the coast through La Cala de Mijas, Calahonda, the Costa del Sol Hospital and ending in Marbella city centre. Here, you can change bus lines and get to La Canada shopping centre, Puerto Banus and all the way to Algeciras near Gibraltar.

Sports are easily incorporated into a Sitio de Calahonda lifestyle. Tennis is very popular in the area with courts and lessons widely available and having its own coastline, means there is an array of water sports available. The area also has one of the highest concentrations of world class golf courses on the coast which is the reason why the Costa del Sol is often referred to as the Costa del Golf. There are more than 40 golf courses and a number of international championships are hosted on them, such as the Ryder Cup, the World Championship, the Spanish Open and the PGA Matchplay. There are 10 golf courses within a 10 kilometer radius of Calahonda alone.

Health care needs are provided for by chemists and homeopathy specialist. There are three medical centers in Calahonda, offering a 24 hour service and the state-funded state-of-the-art medical facility – Hospital Costa del Sol is just minutes from Calahonda. In 2008 the hospital began a large scale expansion to increase its floor space by an additional 34,000 square meters and adding an additional 150 beds to its current 400. After enlargement the hospital will be able to specialize in Medical Oncology, Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine in Oncology, Vascular Surgery and Neurology, Endocrinology and Rheumatology, Mental Health and Maternity.

There are numerous international schools on the coast providing primary and secondary education and international qualifications including GSCE’s, A Levels and the International Baccalaureate. One of the best known international schools in the area – the English International School (EIC), is approximately 5 to 10 minutes’ drive from Calahonda. There is also a selection of private Catholic Spanish schooling and state funded schools all very nearby.
